NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident
On February 12, 1999, about 1200 eastern standard time, a Cessna 172M, N61745, registered to Church of Christ Bahama Mission, crashed shortly after takeoff from Rum Cay Airport, Rum Cay, Bahamas, while on a Title 14 CFR Part 91 business flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed. The aircraft received substantial damage and the private-rated pilot and two passengers were not injured. The flight was originating at the time of the accident.
The pilot stated that during takeoff on runway 13, the aircraft lifted off normally and climbed to 50 feet agl. The aircraft then encountered a wind shift from the left side with an updraft and a twisting motion like a whirlwind. The aircraft nosed up and the right wing dropped. The stall warning horn activated and the aircraft stalled. He lowered the nose and returned the wings to level. The aircraft was just above the seagrape bushes and he raised the wing flaps and settled the aircraft into the bushes for a forced landing.
