NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On January 26, 1994, about 1200 hours Greenwich mean time (GMT), a Grumman AA1B, N1512R, collided with trees and the terrain during landing flare near Bayreuth, Germany. The pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured and the airplane sustained substantial damage. The personal flight was being operated by Ivo Machane of Burlington, Massachusetts. The flight originated in Prague, Czech Republic and was arriving at its destination when the accident occurred. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a visual flight rules flight plan was filed. The pilot provided a written statement detailing the accident. He said that due to strong winds, he decided to land at Bayreuth. During the descent he reported that he got "...some carburetor ice." With reduced power, the airplane lost altitude and descended behind a hill where the pilot reported encountering "heavy downdrafts." He said that he restored the airplane's engine to full power, but was unable to "overclimb these downdrafts." He landed in a forest which resulted in substantial damage to the airplane. He reported the winds were gusting up to 50 miles per hour.
