NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On November 1, 1994, a Bell 212 helicopter, Mexican registration XA-SVS, was destroyed during water impact in the Caribbean Sea near Cozumel, Mexico. The pilot and all 13 passengers were fatally injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed with visibility in excess of 6 miles. The operator of the flight was Transportes Pegaso. The passengers were from the cruise ship Costa Romantica. The flight departed from Playa Del Carmen, which is about 40 miles south of Cancun, en route to the Cozumel Airport, from which they intended to return to their ship. Initial rescue efforts resulted in recovery of 11 bodies. Pieces of wreckage were found on the surface about 3 miles from the airport between the Yucatan Peninsula and the island of Cozumel. Water depth in the area of impact is estimated to be 1,200 feet. Mexico's DGAC is conducting the investigation.
