On November 18, 1994, at 1240 Pacific standard time, a Piper PA- 32R-300, N71RJ, departed the right side of a dirt strip at Tripui, Baja California, Mexico, after the pilot made a precautionary landing due to a rough running engine. Visual meteorological conditions existed at the time and a visual flight rules flight plan was filed. The flight originated at Punta Chivato, Baja California, at 1200 hours for a personal flight to Los Cabos, Mexico. The pilot reported that after about 400 feet into the ground roll the aircraft veered sharply to the right and left the runway, collapsing the right landing gear. The dirt strip was rough, but serviceable, with bushes growing alongside the edge of the runway. The aircraft came to rest in a small gully about 5 feet below the level of the runway.
