NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On January 29, 1995, about 1550 Atlantic standard time, N791AL, a Douglas DC8-62 collided with trees on approach to Manaus, Brazil, while on a 14 CFR Part 121, international, nonscheduled, cargo flight. The airplane was owned and operated by Arrow Air Inc. of Miami, Florida. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and an IFR flight plan was filed. The airplane received minor damage and the crew of three reported no injuries. The flight originated from Miami, Florida about 1029 eastern standard time the same day. Arrow Air Inc. Director of Operations reported the flight was on an ILS approach when they reported ground contact at minimums and did not see the airport. They executed a go-around,and the No. 4 engine and left flap struck a tree. On climbout the No. 4 engine failed, the crew declared an emergency, held, and executed another approach and landed without further incident.
