NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

THE PILOT REPORTED THAT THE AIRPLANE WAS IN CRUISE FLIGHT AT 1500 FEET MSL WHEN THE ENGINE LOST PARTIAL POWER. ALL ATTEMPTS TO REGAIN ENGINE POWER WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. SHE STATED THAT SHE MADE A FORCED LANDING IN A FRESHLY PLOWED CORN FIELD, BUT DURING THE LANDING ROLL THE NOSEWHEEL COLLAPSED AND THE AIRCRAFT NOSED OVER. POSTACCIDENT EXAMINATION OF THE AIRPLANE FUEL SYSTEM REVEALED THAT FUEL WAS PRESENT IN THE FUEL LINES TO THE CARBURETOR. POSTACCIDENT EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE AND ITS ACCESSORIES REVEALED NO EVIDENCE OF PREIMPACT MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION. HOWEVER, A COMPRESSION TEST WAS PERFORMED AND COMPRESSIONS OF 54/80; 18/80; 62/80 AND 66/80 WERE OBTAINED ON CYLINDERS 1 THROUGH 4, RESPECTIVELY.

NTSB Probable Cause Narrative

loss of engine power for undetermined reasons. A related factor was the lack of suitable terrain.
