NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On April 28, 1995, about 1143 mountain daylight time, a Douglas DC-8F-54, N43UA, registered to First Security Bank, operated by Millon Air as a 14 CFR Part 121 supplemental cargo flight for Lineas Aereas Mayas, crashed on landing roll at La Aurora International Airport, Guatemala City, Guatemala. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed and an instrument flight plan was filed. The airplane was destroyed by postcrash fire. The airline transport pilot-in-command sustained serious injuries. The commercial pilot copilot sustained minor injuries and the flight engineer was not injured. The flight originated from Miami, Florida, about 2 hours 28 minutes before the accident. The Director General De Aeronautical Civil, stated that the airplane was observed landing on runway 19 with about 5,400 feet of runway remaining. The runway was wet and skid marks were present on the last 1,800 feet of the runway. The airplane rolled off the end of the runway, collided with approach lights, perimeter fence, plunged down a steep incline into a residential area, fatally injuring six persons on the ground. The copilot stated airspeed at touch down was about 135 knots. Engine reverse was applied on Nos. 2 and 3 engines on touchdown. Flaps were at 50 degrees. Braking was applied after decelerating below 100 knots. The pilot-in-command attempted to turn off the runway on to the taxiway; however, the airplane continued forward off the end of the runway. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Guatemala.
