NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On April 24, 1995, about 1630 mountain standard time, a Cessna 501, N120ES, registered to First Security Bank of Utah, operated by TACA International Airlines, on a 14 CFR Part 91 familiarization flight, collided with trees and crashed short of the runway in the vicinity of El Salvador International Airport, San Salvador, Central America. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The airplane was destroyed by postcrash fire. The airline transport pilot-in-command and commercial pilot/copilot were not injured. The flight originated from the El Salvador International Airport about 10 minutes before the accident. Major Roberto Orletto, Direccion General de Transporte Aero, San Salvador, El Salvador, Central America, stated the copilot informed the pilot on base turn to final that they had a difference in their altimeters. The power levers were in the idle position. Both crewmembers were looking inside the airplane when they felt a vibration. The pilot-in-command advanced the power levers; however, the airplane stalled and collided with the trees about 2,500 feet from the approach end of the runway, and came to rest on a perimeter road about 1,200 feet from the approach end of the runway. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of El Salvador.
