NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On March 24, 1995, at 0401 New Foundland Daylight Savings Time, a Cessna 172M, N31083, owned and operated by American and European Aircraft Sales of Coral Springs, Florida, struck rising terrain while departing from St. Johns Airport, New Foundland, Canada. The airplane was destroyed and the pilot was fatally injured. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed and the flight was operated on an instrument flight rules (IFR) flight. According to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, the airplane was being delivered to Croatia. The next planned fuel stop was Santa Maria, Azores. The accident flight departed on runway 29 with weather conditions of visibility 4 miles and a 200 foot scattered cloud layer. The airplane struck rising terrain at an elevation of 800 feet above sea level, approximately 1/2 mile from the airport. This investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
