NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On September 16, 1996, about 1943 Greenwich Mean Time, a Lake LA-4-200, an amphibian, N2664P, and the airline transport rated pilot were reported missing, after the pilot radioed a loss of engine power, his position, and his intentions to ditched at sea near Santa Maria Island, Azores, Portugal. The last departure point was St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada. The destination was Santa Maria Island. The pilot was ferrying the airplane to London, England via Santa Maria Island. The last reported position of the aircraft was coordinates 42 degrees 20 minutes North; 37 degrees 34 minutes West. Search and rescue operations were conducted.
