NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On November 20, 1996, approximately 0200 central standard time, a Bell 407 helicopter, Spanish registration EC-GJC, was substantially damaged during a forced landing following a loss of engine power near Moron de la Frontera, Spain. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and the pilot, one mechanic, two medics, and one patient were not injured. The Bell 407 helicopter was engaged in a medevac/ambulance operation, and was in cruise flight at 110 knots and 600 feet AGL when the pilot heard a sharp, increasing pitch tone in his headset. The pilot noticed that the Nr needle was above the Np needle, and there were no warning or caution lights. Prior to selecting FADEC to MANUAL, the pilot saw an amber colored light, which is believed to be a FADEC Fault light. The pilot reduced the throttle to 90% Np, and placed the FADEC switch to the MANUAL position. After 10-15 seconds the engine experience several excursions of shutdown and re-ignitions. The pilot initiated an autorotation to a plowed field. During touch down, the helicopter landed hard. Subsequently, the main rotor blades contacted the tailboom separating it from the fuselage. The helicopter was equipped with the new improved wiring harness, and the engine overspeed trip was inabled at 110%. The aircraft's flight manual had revisions dated October 24, 1996, "FOR FADEC FAULT ANNUNCIATION INTERPRETATION." The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Spain.
