NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On December 6, 1996, at about 0430 eastern standard time (est), a Learjet 36, N14TX, registered to Chrysler Aviation, Inc., of Van Nuys, California, , impacted the terrain 500 meters south of the Stephenville Airport, Stephenville, Newfoundland, while on final approach. The airplane was destroyed during impact with the terrain and no post accident fire was reported. The captain and co-pilot sustained fatal injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident however, the Airport Manager reported that there were fairly severe snow squalls around the time of the accident. An IFR flight plan was filed. The business flight was conducted under 14 CFR Part 135. The flight originated from Grand Rapids, Michigan, with an intended refueling stop at Stephenville, Newfoundland, than on to their intended destination of Shannon, Ireland.
