NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On June 11, 1997, about 1600 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 501, N1AT, registered to Betaco, Inc., was substantially damaged during an attempted go-around after landing at the Chub Cay International Airport, Berry Island, Bahamas. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and an IFR flight plan was filed for the 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight. The airline transport-rated pilot and seven passengers were not injured. The time of departure from the Fort Lauderdale International Airport, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has not been determined. The pilot stated that the airplane was landed at about the VREF airspeed with full flaps extended. During the landing roll with the speedbrakes deployed, the anti-skid activated and the brakes applied, he recognized that the airplane was not decelerating. With unsuitable obstructions ahead he elected to go-around and applied full thrust to both engines but doesn't recall if he partially retracted the flaps. The airplane failed to clear a grove of trees past the departure end of runway and came to rest upright. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of the Bahamas.
