NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On July 26, 1998, at 2355 universal coordinated time, a Fairchild-Hiller FH-227B, N564LE, received minor damage while landing at Keflavik Airport, Reykjavik, Iceland. The certificate flight crew was not injured. The meteorological conditions are unknown. The last point of departure for the ferry flight was Aberdeen, Scotland. The flight was conducted under 14 CFR Part 91. According to the initial notification from the Icelandic Aircraft Accident Investigation Board: "...When landing gears were extended the crew heard loud cracking noise from the rear. The landing was aborted and the aircraft passed the tower for visual observation and one of the crew went to the cabin for visual check of the landing gears where he observed that the right landing gear lock strut rear member had broken loose from the side member assembly and was hanging down. Thus the gear was unstable and on landing when the gear took weight it folded up and the aircraft right propeller, wing tip and bottom of the fuselage touched ground and the aircraft went off the runway in a gentle right turn. The fuselage bottom skin and frame structure is extensively damaged and right wing tip, propeller blades, lock strut assembly and drag strut destroyed. The aircraft was removed to a parking stand without further apparent damage and is resting on wing jack instead of the right gear...Principal finding so far...no lubricant was found in the lock strut hinge pin that should normally be packed with grease...." This investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Iceland.
