NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) in Wellington, New Zealand, requested assistance in their investigation of a sightseeing accident in the Mt. Cook area on the South Island of New Zealand. The Regional Director from the Southwest Regional Office, Dr. Gary Mucho, was dispatched as the U.S. Accredited Representative. The Investigator-in-Charge is Mr. Ken Matthews of the TAIC in Wellington. The accident involved a Cessna 177, ZKDKL, that was on a local sightseeing flight around the Mt. Cook area of the South Alps. The aircraft impacted the eastern side of a mountain at the 8,900-foot level at 1145 hours. The aircraft was demolished and the pilot and two passengers were fatally injured. The aircraft was number two in a sequence of four aircraft tour flights that departed from Lake Tekapo, New Zealand, between 1105 and 1120. The other pilots reported the weather was windy over the mountains with good visibility. A lower cloud layer was observed on the western side of the mountains. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of New Zealand.
