NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On October 10,1998, at 1008 atlantic daylight time, a Cessna 172M, N9728H, collided with water one mile south of the Freeport, Bahamas. The personal flight operated under the provisions of Title 14 CFR Part 91 with a flight plan filed. A Review of weather data recovered from Freeport International Airport disclosed that visual weather conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. An examination of the airplane wreckage at the accident site disclosed that the airplane was destroyed. The private pilot and his two passengers were fatally injured. The flight departed Freeport, Bahamas, at approximately 1000. In addition to the surface weather observation, that showed visual weather conditions, it also reported thunderstorm activity in the immediate vicinity of the accident site. The preliminary review of preflight data failed to disclose a weather briefing received by the pilot for this flight. The airplane collided with water one mile off shore from Freeport. According to investigators on site, the airplane broke up into several pieces and rested in twelve feet of water. The circumstances of the flight have not been determined.
