NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On October 2, 1998, about 1421 eastern daylight time, a Boeing 727, HK3985X, operated by Aero Sucre, Inc., as a Title 14 CFR Part 129 cargo flight, from Cali, Colombia, to Quito, Ecuador, was damaged when the airplane made a hard landing. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and an instrument flight plan was filed. The airplane received substantial damage. The airline transport-rated captain, first officer and flight engineer reported no injuries. The flight originated from Cali, Colombia, on the same day about 1241. It was reported that during the landing the airplane initially touched down on the nose gear, bounced, and then finally touched down on the main gear. The airplane continued the roll and there were no injuries nor any emergency evacuation reported. As a result of the hard landing, the airplane suffered substantial damage to the structure at stations 640 and 700. The investigation is under jurisdiction of the Government of Ecuador.
