NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

DURING A LANDING ON A 1200 FOOT GRASS RUNWAY, WITH A TAIL WIND OF 12 TO 25 KNOTS, THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE AIRPLANE. THE AIRPLANE OVERRAN THE END OF THE RUNWAY, IMPACTED A FENCE, THEN A TREE AND NOSED OVER. THERE WAS NO KNOWN WEATHER BRIEF PRIOR TO DEPARTURE. THE PILOT DID RECEIVE CURRENT WINDS, IN FLIGHT, FROM A LOCAL AIRPORT CONTROL TOWER AND ELECTED TO LAND DOWN WIND.

NTSB Probable Cause Narrative

THE PILOT'S IMPROPER IN-FLIGHT PLANNING AND DECISION TO LAND ON A SHORT GRASS RUNWAY WITH A TAIL WIND. A FACTOR IN THIS ACCIDENT WAS THE PILOTS FAILURE TO OBTAIN AND EVALUATE A WEATHER BRIEFING PRIOR TO THE FLIGHT.
