NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

THE PRIVATE PILOT WAS ON THE RETURN LEG OF A CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT. HE COMPUTED HIS REQUIRED FUEL TO BE 41 GALLONS, AND STATED THAT HE BEGAN THE TRIP WITH 55 GALLONS, MEASURED WITH A WOODEN DIPSTICK SUPPLIED WITH THE AIRCRAFT. ON THE RETURN LEG, HE ESTIMATED HEADWINDS TO BE 15 MPH FASTER THAN PREDICTED. ABOUT 3 MILES FROM THE DESTINATION AIRPORT, THE ENGINE LOST POWER, AND EVENTUALLY QUIT. A FORCE LANDING WAS MADE IN A STAND OF PINE TREES. EXAMINATION OF THE WRECKAGE REVEALED 1 QUART OF FUEL IN THE LEFT TANK, AND 4.5 GALLONS IN THE RIGHT TANK. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF FUEL LEAKAGE. THE ENGINE RAN SATISFACTORILY ON THE AIRFRAME AFTER THE ACCIDENT. AIRCRAFT TYPE CERTIFICATE DATA SPECIFIES UP TO 10 GALLONS OF FUEL IS UNUSABLE ON THIS MODEL OF AIRCRAFT.

NTSB Probable Cause Narrative

INADEQUATE PREFLIGHT PLANNING AND PREPARATION BY THE PILOT, BY NOT ASSURING AN ADEQUATE SUPPLY OF FUEL, WHICH RESULTED IN FUEL EXHAUSTION. FACTORS WERE TREES IN THE EMERGENCY LANDING AREA.
