NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On August 26, 1999, at 1343 local Kenya time (1043 Greenwich Mean Time) a Cessna 206G turbo utility airplane, N733YU, operated by African Inland Mission, International, was destroyed in impact with a residence, while on approach to Wilson Airport, Nairobi, Kenya. The Airline Transport rated pilot sustained serious injuries. Of the four passengers on board, one was fatally injured. Two passengers sustained serious injuries and one received minor injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The U.S. registered airplane operated under Title 14 CFR Part 91, and under the authority of the regulations of the Civil Aviation Administration, Kenya. Attempts are being made to find whether a flight plan was filed, for the flight which originated at Mwanza, Tanzania. Local personnel described the weather as clear at the time of the accident, and the temperature about 78 degrees Fahrenheit. The impact site is about 5,000 feet mean sea level. The airplane came to rest in a top-floor room of a residence. The fatally injured passenger was a German citizen. The seriously injured passengers were an Irish priest, a Tanzanian woman, and a Dutch man. The fourth passenger, a Thai man working for the United Nations refugee agency in Tanzania, was released from hospital the day of the accident. No one on the ground was injured. There was no fire. The airplane was manufactured in 1978. The airplane and the Continental TSIO 520 turbo-charged engine total hours are presently unknown. According to Federal Aviation Administration records, the U.S. pilot held ATP multi-engine, and Commercial single engine land ratings, and accumulated 1,665 total flight hours. He was a certified flight instructor, airplane, and held an airframe and powerplants certificate. His first class medical certificate was dated April 20, 1999, with a limitation requiring the use of corrective lenses.
