NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On August 28, 1999, about 1630 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 206, HR-AJM, registered to Sosa Airlines, crashed into the Caribbean Sea, near La Ceiba, Honduras, while on a domestic air taxi flight, from Utila Island, Honduras, to Goloson Airport, La Ceiba, Honduras. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and it is not known if a flight plan was filed. The airplane was not recovered from the water and is presumed destroyed. The pilot and three passengers, all Honduran, were fatally injured. The flight originated from Utila Island, the same day, at 1600. The pilot reportedly told the tower he had engine problems and would attempt a belly landing on the water. Witnesses reported seeing the plane cartwheel as it hit the water. A Honduran Air Force helicopter helped locate an oil stain where the airplane struck the water. Navy personnel, fire fighters, and volunteer civilian divers, searched for 2 days before finding the wreckage with the engine torn off in 110 feet of water. Two bodies were found floating in the water, and two bodies were found trapped in the airplane. A representative of Sosa Airlines stated that there are no plans to salvage the wreckage. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Honduras.
