NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On August 18, 1999 at 1745 Eastern Daylight Time, a float equipped Cessna 180, N4535B, was substantially damaged while landing on Tap Lake, Quebec, Canada. The pilot and two passengers were not injured. Weather conditions and type of flight plan were unknown. According to Canadian aviation authorities, the pilot departed from a runway at Pembroke Airport (YNG3), Ontario, and was destined for Tap Lake, Quebec. The airplane touched down on the lake with its landing gear extended, flipped up side down, and remained suspended on the surface of the lake by the floats. The pilot and two passengers egressed from the airplane, and the airplane subsequently sank to the bottom of the lake. The pilot could not remember visually checking the landing gear before landing on Tap Lake; however, he recalled observing the landing gear lever in the "up" position. This investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
