NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On September 3, 1999, at 1341 local time, an Airtours, Inc., charter Cessna 404 Caravan, registration G-ILGW, crashed following takeoff from Glasgow, Scotland, Airport. The flight was to transport Airtours, Inc. crewmembers from Glasgow to the destination airport, Aberdeen, Scotland. The commercial and instrument rated pilot and seven of ten passengers on board were fatally injured. The three remaining passengers were seriously injured. The airplane was destroyed and there was a post-crash fire. The flight was operating under the Civil Air Regulations of the United Kingdom. The airplane was observed departing runway 23 at the Glasgow Airport. Ground witnesses reported that about 200 to 300 feet above ground level, the airplane veered slightly to the left and then rolled to the right and impacted the ground. The investigator-in-charge (IIC), Air Accident Investigations Branch, United Kingdom, was assisted by investigators from Cessna and Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM). Post-crash examination found the right engine propeller in the feathered position. The landing gear and flaps were found in the UP position. The airframe was partially destroyed in the crash and post-impact fire. A teardown examination of the right engine was performed at the facilities of CSE, Inc., in Oxford, U.K., and no discrepancies were noted. The left engine and both McCauley propeller assemblies were sent to the TCM facility in Mobile, Alabama, for scheduled teardown examination, under the oversight of the AAIB and NTSB, assisted by TCM and McCauley engineers. Pilot's United Kingdom certificate no. CP/200032F/F, ratings Commercial, ASMEL, and Instrument. Time last 90 days: 120.7 flight hours. Airplane was manufactured by Cessna as serial no. 0690, in 1980. The Continental GTSIO-520-M(2) engines were: Left, serial no. 276452R, having a total time of 1324 hours; and Right, serial no. 81068, having a total time of 36 hours.
