NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident
On October 13, 1999, about 2035 central daylight time, a Cessna 208B, N1117G, operated by Skylink Aviation, Inc, a Canadian company, was substantially damaged during a forced landing in Lake Erie. The two pilots were not injured. Weather conditions at the accident site are unknown. The flight was operated on an instrument flight rules (IFR) flight plan under Canadian rules.
According to preliminary information released by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada:
"...The Cessna 208B Caravan aircraft, serial #208B80370, was on an IFR cargo flight from Windsor Ontario to Hamilton Ontario. While overflying Lake Erie, the flight crew reported hearing a loud bang and observed the propeller abruptly stop. An emergency was declared with Cleveland ATC. The engine (Pratt & Whitney PT6-114A) was shutdown and the flight crew ditched the aircraft in Lake Erie, 2 nautical miles south of Pointe Aux Pins, Ontario. The U.S. Coast Guard recovered the flight crew who were taken to Chatham Airport where an ambulance was waiting. The aircraft will be salvaged and the engine will be forwarded to TSB engineering branch for examination...."
