NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On January 14, 2000, an Agusta 109E, G-JRSL, collided with the terrain following a loss of control during cruise flight. The accident occurred in Romney Marsh, Kent, United Kingdom. The helicopter was substantially damaged. There were minor injuries to the three people on board. During cruise flight, at about 1,800 feet, in late evening, the crew was flying with the autopilot on and with hands and feet off the controls. The crew reported hearing a bang and all the lights went out, the screens went blank and the autopilot ceased to function. The crew attempted to establish manual flight. The helicopter yawed and the crew was unable to see visual cues. The helicopter impacted the terrain at which time it rolled onto its side. This investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) of the UK.
