NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On January 14, 2000, at 1216 local time (1612 universal coordinated time, UTC) TAM-60, a C-130B, operated by the Bolivian Air Force crashed during takeoff at Chimore Airport, Santa Cruz region, Bolivia. There were 31 persons on board the airplane, comprised of 7 crewmembers and 24 passengers. Five persons, all passengers, were fatally injured. Day, visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the crash. The airplane was on an IFR flight plan from Chimore Airport to Trinidad Airport, Bolivia, under the authority of the Bolivian Air Force and the Civil Aviation Authority, Bolivia. During the attempted takeoff, the airplane departed the left side of runway 35, about 600 meters from the approach end of the runway. The total runway length was 1450 meters and width was 20 meters. Following runway departure, the airplane impacted the far side of an approximately 12 foot-wide ditch that paralleled the left side of the runway. The airplane was destroyed in the impact, and came to rest in a forested area off the left side of the runway. There was no fire and injured personnel, with assistance from airport personnel, egressed the wreckage. Follow-on examinations are being prepared for engine and propeller assemblies at National Air Motive, Oakland, California, and for the nose gear assembly at a facility to be determined. Oversight will be provided by the Investigator-in-Charge, Bolivia, and the National Transportation Safety Board. The aircrew were trained and certified under the authority of the Bolivian Air Force.
