NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On February 9, 2000, at 2230 universal coordinated time (UTC) a Sikorsky CH-3E helicopter, U.S. registration N650DC, operated by Rick Lucas Helicopters, Ltd., doing business as Helipro, crashed during a logging operation in Wairoa Gorge, approximately 13 nautical miles south-southwest of Nelson, New Zealand (41 degrees 30 minutes South, 173 degrees 05 minutes East). There were two crewmembers and no passengers on board. The helicopter sustained substantial damage. The flight was on a logging operation in day, visual meteorological conditions. It is not yet known whether a flight plan was filed. The flight was conducted under the authority of the Civil Aviation Authority, New Zealand. The pilot reported that he experienced vertical oscillations and attempted to make an emergency landing in a river bed. During the landing the helicopter rolled and came to rest on its side. The crewmembers egressed without injury. The investigation is being conducted under the authority of the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand.
