NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On February 4, 2000, about 2145 Atlantic standard time, a McDonnell Douglas 369E, French registry FG IHC, registered to a private individual, crashed into the sea while attempting to land on a helipad of a yacht located near Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Islands, British West Indies. Exact weather conditions and flight plan information is unknown. The helicopter was substantially damaged and the pilot, the sole occupant, was fatally injured. The flight originated about 2036 from the Grand Turk International Airport, Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Islands, British West Indies. According to an advisor to the Director of Civil Aviation, for Turks and Caicos Islands, the pilot was attempting to land the helicopter on the yacht when the helicopter descended into the water. The wreckage was recovered for further examination. The captain of the yacht reported that it was a moonless night with good visibility about the time of the accident. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of the British West Indies.
