NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident
On February 3, 2000, approximately 1435 local, a Cayman Islands registered amphibian Cessna 208, 8Q-HIF, flipped over during a water landing at the Filitheyo Seaplane Base, Dhiguvaru Falhu, Maldives. The pilot, cabin crewperson, and the seven passengers were not injured, but the aircraft, which was owned and operated by Hummingbird Island Airlines Ltd., sustained substantial damage. The non-scheduled commercial revenue flight, which departed Male' International Airport about 30 minutes earlier, was being operated in visual meteorological conditions.
The pilot reported that after takeoff from Male' International, he was distracted by a radio conversation with Air Traffic Control, and therefore forgot to raise the amphibious landing gear. En route, he did not notice any vibration or turbulence, and was unaware of any reduction in normal cruise speed. As he approached the Filitheyo Water Aerodrome, the pilot realized that the coordinates that had been set in the GPS for the landing area were actually the coordinates for the resort island of Filitheyo, about 2.5 miles north of the landing lagoon. The pilot therefore became busy resetting the correct coordinates into the GPS, and did not notice that the gear was still extended. After touchdown, the extended landing gear dug into the water, and the aircraft flipped over on its back. The pilot and cabin crewperson helped the passengers exit the aircraft, and all occupants were picked up by a transfer boat.
