NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On March 17, 2000, approximately 1230 central standard time, a Canadian registered Douglas DC-3C, C-FNTF, being operated by Points North Air Services, and being flown by a Canadian certificated flight crew (airline transport pilot-in command and commercial co-pilot), was destroyed during impact with terrain following a loss of control immediately after a balked landing at the Ennadai Lake airstrip, Nunavut, Canada. Both pilots were fatally injured and there was no post-crash fire. Visual meteorological conditions were reported and a company flight plan was in effect. The flight, which was engaged in hauling cargo, originated from the operator's Points North Landing airstrip, Saskatchewan, Canada, approximately 1125. The aircraft was loaded with several crates of construction materials as well as more than 5,000 pounds of two-by-four lumber arranged longitudinally in the fuselage and secured laterally with cargo tie-down straps. Witnesses reported the aircraft touched down on the 2,700-foot long, 150-foot wide ice strip, approximately 500 feet upwind of the approach end of the southwest oriented runway. After rolling a short distance, during which the tailwheel remained airborne, the aircraft accelerated and executed a balked landing. Witnesses report that as the aircraft passed the upwind end of the strip it pitched into an abrupt nose-up climb reaching an altitude of 400-500 feet above ground and then rolled left into a descending left turn. The aircraft impacted terrain approximately 400 feet south of the southwest end of the airstrip. Post-crash examination of the aircraft's controls revealed no discontinuity. A left quartering headwind of approximately 8 knots was reported at the time of the accident. This report is for informational purposes only. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Canada.
