NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On April 22, 2000, about 1145 hours local time, a New Zealand registered Cessna U206F, ZK-JBJ, entered instrument meteorological conditions and collided with mountainous terrain in Lindis Pass approximately 19 miles from Wanaka, New Zealand. The aircraft was owned and operated by the pilot in accordance with New Zealand civil aviation regulations. The aircraft was destroyed in the collision sequence. The pilot, who held a New Zealand private pilot license without an instrument endorsement, and five passengers sustained fatal injuries. According to reports from ground witnesses driving in the Lindis Pass, the weather conditions consisted of obscured sky and restricted visibility's of a mile or less due to clouds obscuring the mountains. The personal transportation flight originated from Queenstown, New Zealand at 1058 local time and was en route to Tekapo. The accident is under the jurisdiction of and is being investigated by the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand.
