NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On May 18, 2000, about 1000 eastern daylight time, a Grumman HU16A, N43GL, registered to Amphib Inc., collapsed a landing gear and departed the runway after touchdown at Grantley Adams International Airport, Barbados, Barbados, during a forced landing, while on an international on-demand air taxi flight, from Saint Maarten, Netherlands Antilles. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and a visual flight rules flight plan was filed. The airplane received minor damage. The crew of two and four passengers reported no injuries. The flight had originated at 0950, and was en route to Brazil. Just after takeoff, at an altitude of 600 feet, the left engine chip detector light illuminated, the oil temperature rose and the oil pressure dropped to zero. The pilot shutoff the engine, feathered the propeller, and initiated a return to the airport. Due to rapid loss of altitude the aircraft was not able to align with the runway, touched down at an angle, veering off to the left, rolled on the grass, and the right landing gear collapsed, causing the right float to separate. The airplane came to rest at the edge of the taxiway, east of exit No. 1. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Barbados.
