NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On June 15, 2000, at 1556 hours local time, a Fairchild SA-227-AC, New Zealand registration ZK-RCA, sustained a collapse of the left main landing gear on touchdown at the Gisborne, New Zealand, airport. The aircraft was operated by Eagle Airways, Ltd., of Hamilton, New Zealand, and was engaged in a crew instructional flight under the provisions of the New Zealand civil aviation regulations. The airplane sustained substantial damage. Neither of the two crewmembers, the sole occupants, were injured. The flight originated at the Hamilton airport about 1500 on the day of the accident as a local area training flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a company flight plan was filed. Preliminary information supplied by the New Zealand Transport Accident Investigation Commission states that on touchdown the left-hand gear collapsed rearwards to about 130 degrees, following the failure of both lower drag braces at their attach points to the gear leg. The captain applied power and executed a go-around. A left gear unsafe warning illuminated in the cockpit and the crew received a confirmation by air traffic controllers that the left gear was trailing and that both drag braces were hanging loose. The gear was raised and the aircraft was flown to Hamilton, where a successful gear-up landing was accomplished. The investigation has found the left outboard lower drag brace had an 8-mm deep fatigue crack at the right angle of the drilled recess, which accommodates a grease nipple. The drag brace failed on landing, initiating from the crack. The inboard drag brace failed in overload simultaneously. The accident is being investigated by and is under the jurisdiction of the New Zealand Transport Accident Investigation Commission.
