NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On June 13, 2000, at 2250 Eastern Daylight Time, a Dassault Falcon 20, N184GA, operating as a Grand Aire Express cargo flight, was substantially damaged when it impacted terrain during an approach to Peterborough Airport (CYPQ), Peterborough, Ontario. The captain and first officer, both of whom were certificated airline transport pilots, received minor injuries. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. An instrument flight rules flight plan was filed for the flight, between Willow Run Airport (YIP), Ypsilanti, Michigan, and Peterborough. The flight was conducted under 14 CFR Part 135. According to information provided by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, the flight crew was cleared for an NDB approach to Runway 09, at 2218. The crew executed a missed approach, and was cleared for another instrument approach to Runway 09, at 2230. The crew completed the approach, but the airplane touched down about half way down the 5,000-foot runway. The crew aborted the landing, and the airplane flew a low level, left-hand pattern for another landing on the same runway. The airplane was observed turning onto final in a nose-low attitude. It then impacted a wet, freshly-plowed field, about 2,000 feet prior to the runway. It skidded about 400 feet before coming to rest in an upright position, facing the opposite direction. Weather, recorded at the airport at 2238, included winds from 070 degrees at 5 knots, visibility 9 statute miles, an overcast cloud layer at 400 feet, temperature 59 degrees Fahrenheit, dewpoint 59 degrees Fahrenheit, and a barometric pressure of 30.03 inches. Weather, recorded at 2300, included winds from 050 degrees at 5 knots, visibility 9 statute miles, temperature and dewpoint 59 degrees Fahrenheit, an overcast layer of 300 feet, and a barometric pressure of 30.02 inches. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
