NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On July 08, 2000, at 1950 central daylight time, a British Aerospace Jetstream 3201 transport category airplane, N912FJ, operating as Aereocaribe Flight 7831, was destroyed upon impact with mountainous terrain while maneuvering around severe weather near Chulum Juarez, Municipality of Tila, State of Chiapas, in the Republic of Mexico. The airplane was owned by the First Security Bank of Salt Lake City, Utah, and was being operated by Aereocaribe S.A. of C.V., of Merida, State of Yucatan, on a scheduled domestic commuter passenger flight. The airline transport rated captain, the instrument rated commercial pilot serving as first officer, and the 17 passengers aboard the twin-engine airplane were fatally injured. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed near the accident site at the time of the accident. An instrument flight rules (IFR) flight plan was filed and an IFR clearance was received for the 80-nautical mile revenue flight. The flight originated from the Tuxla-Gutierrez Airport (TGZ), in the State of Chiapas, at approximately 1920. The flight's intended destination was the Villahermosa Airport (VSA), in the State of Tabasco. The accident investigation is under the jurisdiction and control of the Government of the Republic of Mexico.
