NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On August 7, 2000, about 2035 Greenwich Mean Time, a Cessna 210L, TF-GTI, was destroyed when it impacted the water, approximately 1,100 feet from shore, near Reykjavik, Iceland. The pilot and two of the five passengers were fatally injured. The remaining three passengers were seriously injured. Visual meteorological conditions (VMC) prevailed, and a visual flight rules flight plan was filed for the charter flight that departed Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, destined for the Reykjavik. While executing an approach in VMC to Runway 20 at Reykjavik, the tower controller instructed the pilot to execute a left-hand turn because of traffic on the ILS approach, and then to follow that traffic for Runway 20. The pilot made a tight circle to the left, but was still too close to the traffic, which was then passing over the threshold. The tower controller instructed the accident pilot to execute a go-around. The pilot started a climb and then turned right, per the local procedure. While in the turn, and approximately 500 feet agl, the pilot reported a total loss of engine power. The pilot was immediately cleared straight in for landing. At 20:35:04, the airplane was seen banking to the left and spinning to the left while falling straight down. The airplane completed 1-1/2 to 2 revolutions before impacting the water. This investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Iceland.
