NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On September 28, 2000, approximately late morning/early afternoon Pacific daylight time, a Cessna A185F, N90151, recently purchased by a private US citizen, and being flown by a US private pilot, crashed in mountainous terrain approximately 310 degrees magnetic bearing and 87 nautical miles from Smithers, British Columbia, Canada. The pilot and two passengers were fatally injured and the aircraft was destroyed. Meteorological conditions at the accident site were not known and a VFR flight plan had been filed. The flight was estimated to have departed Smithers approximately 45 minutes before the accident. The flight departed Deer Park, Washington, on the afternoon of September 28th and flew to Williams Lake, British Columbia. The aircraft then departed Williams Lake on the following morning stopping at Smithers for fuel. The pilot obtained a weather briefing from flight service and filed a VFR flight plan from Smithers direct to Dease Lake and then direct to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. The wreckage was located at 56 degrees 07.98 minutes north latitude and 128 degrees 15.99 minutes west longitude at 5,200 feet above mean sea level. The accident was noted to lie along a direct line between Smithers and Whitehorse, and the site was on the southeastern face of a snow covered, treeless ridgeline. Weather conditions along the route of flight from Smithers called for ceilings from 5,000 to 7,000 feet on the day of the accident. This report is for information purposes only. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Canada.
