NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On November 15, 2000, about 1121 Eastern Standard Time, a Piper PA-28-140, N3DP, was destroyed when it impacted terrain near Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. The certificated private pilot was fatally injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. A visual flight rules flight plan was filed for the flight that departed Lawrence, Massachusetts, destined for Bromont, Quebec, Canada. The personal flight was conducted under 14 CFR Part 91. According to information provided by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, the pilot was approaching the Sherbrooke area, but elected to return to the United States. The pilot then asked for assistance from Montreal Air Traffic Control in an attempt to descend below weather conditions he was encountering. While attempting a "hand off" to Boston Air Route Traffic Control Center, Montreal Air Traffic Control lost radar contact with the airplane. The airplane came to rest in a wooded mountainous area about 15 miles south of Sherbrooke. The pilot's logbook was recovered at the accident site. Examination of the logbook revealed that the pilot had recorded about 156 total hours of flying experience, 8 hours of which was instrument training. The weather recorded at the Sherbrooke Airport, at 1100, included winds from 270 degrees at 9 knots, visibility 9 statute miles, a broken layer of clouds at 1,400 feet, temperature 36 degrees Fahrenheit, dewpoint 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and a barometric pressure of 29.58 inches of mercury. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
