NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

AT 5,500 FEET ONE BLADE OF THE TWO BLADE PROPELLER FAILED, RESULTING IN SEPARATION OF A 14 INCH SECTION OF THE BLADE. THE PILOT THEN SECURED THE ENGINE AND PERFORMED A FORCED LANDING IN A RIVER BED. TOUCHDOWN WAS TAIL FIRST AND WHEN THE MAIN GEAR CONTACTED THE SAND THE AIRPLANE NOSED OVER. THE PROPELLER LOG BOOK COULD NOT BE LOCATED, HOWEVER, THE PILOT ESTIMATED PROPELLER TOTAL TIME TO BE ABOUT 405 HOURS. EXAMINATION REVEALED AT LEAST THREE CRACK ZONES ON THE FRACTURE SURFACE FROM PREVIOUS UNDOCUMENTED DAMAGE.
