NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

WHILE CONDUCTING A CHARTER FLT FROM DICKINSON, ND, TO BILLINGS, MT, THE ENGINE FAILED 12 MILES FROM THE DESTINATION AFTER ONE HR 23 MINUTES OF FLT. THE PLT CONDUCTED AN EMERGENCY LANDING ON A FREEWAY. INVESTIGATION REVEALED A BREAK IN THE CRANKCASE ABOVE NUMBER 4 CYLINDER. INTERNAL COMPONENTS OF THE ENGINE SHOWED EVIDENCE OF OVERHEAT. THE NUMBER 4 CONNECTING ROD FAILED AT THE CONNECTING ROD CAP. APPROXIMATELY 1 1 /2 QUARTS OF OIL REMAINED IN THE ENGINE AT ENGINE REMOVAL. ALL INTERNAL LUBRICATION POINTS FUNCTIONED NORMALLY.
