NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

DURING FLT, THE ENG LOST POWER. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE ACFT COLLIDED WITH TREES DURING AN EMERG LANDING & WAS DAMAGED. INSPN OF THE ENG REVEALED THE ALIGNMENT DOWEL & THE CRANKSHAFT GEAR ATTACHING BOLT (AT THE AFT END OF THE CRANKSHAFT) HAD FAILED, WHICH ALLOWED THE GEAR TO DISCONNECT & RESULTED IN A LOSS OF POWER. A METALLURGICAL EXAM SHOWED THAT THE GEAR ATTACHMENT BOLT HAD FAILED FROM TENSILE OVERSTRESS. FAILURE MODE OF THE DOWEL PIN WAS NOT DETERMINED.

FAILURE OF THE ACCESSORY DRIVE (CRANKSHAFT) DOWEL PIN AND/OR GEAR BOLT, WHICH RESULTED IN THE ACCESSORY DRIVEGEAR BECOMING DISCONNECTED FROM THE CRANKSHAFT.
