NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

WHILE CRUISING AT FL 230 A FLT ATTENDANT WHO WAS SERVING DRINKS NOTICED A CEILING PANEL FLAPPING AND BULGING. SHE NOTIFIED THE CAPT WHO STARTED A SLOW DESCENT AND GRADUALLY DECREASED THE CABIN PRESSURE. AIRPLANE MADE AN UNSCHEDULED LDG AT DETROIT. INVESTIGATION DISCLOSED A LOOSE VINYL COVERING ON THE CORE OF A CEILING PANEL. CABIN AIR WAS BLOWING BETWEEN THE COVER AND THE PANEL CORE CAUSING FLAPPING. SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION OF THE FUSELAGE REVEALED NO CRACKS AROUND THE RIVET HOLES.
