NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

THE ACFT CAUGHT FIRE SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF AND THE PLT LANDED IN A WHEAT FIELD. THE NOSEWHEEL DUG INTO THE SOFT FIELD AND THE ACFT NOSED OVER. THIS ACFT HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF RECOMMENDATIONS ON WORN AND DETERIORATED FUEL LINES. THE PLTSDESCRIPTION OF HIS ACTIONS DURING THE FORCED LANDING INCLUDE CUTTING THE ENGINE AND THE IGNITION BUT NO MENTION WAS MADE OF CUTTING OFF THE FUEL BY USE OF THE MIXTURE CONTROL OR FUEL SELECTOR.
