NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

THE ACFT COLLIDED WITH RISING TERRAIN AS THE PILOT TRIED UNSUCCESSFULLY TO AVOID THE TREES AND RIDGES. THE TWO REAR SEATPASSENGERS REPORTED THAT THEY FLEW UP A CANYON AT ABOUT 6500 FT MSL. THE RIDGES ON EITHER SIDE WERE AS HIGH AS THE ACFT.THE PILOT WAS SEEN TO LOOK FROM SIDE TO SIDE, LOWER FLAPS, APPLY POWER AND INITIATE A TURN. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT DURING THAT TURN THE ACFT STARTED TO STALL AND A RECOVERY WAS EXECUTED. HE THEN MANEUVERED THROUGH TREES, STRUCK THE TERRAIN AND BOUNCED, STRUCK AGAIN AND CAME TO REST INVERTED. FIRE BROKE OUT AND THE PASSENGERS HELPED THE FRONT SEAT OCCUPANTS ESCAPE.
