NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On October 20, 2000, at 0700 Greenwich Mean Time, a Cessna T303, N9645C, was destroyed when it struck terrain near Dossenheim, Germany. The pilot was fatally injured. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed at the accident site. The flight had been operated on both visual (VFR) and instrument flight rules (IFR) flight plans. According to information released by the Bundesstelle fur Flugunfalluntersuchung (BFU), the pilot departed Regensburg, Germany, en route to Mannheim, Germany, on a combination VFR/IFR/VFR flight plan. In the Mannheim area, he cancelled his IFR clearance and proceeded VFR toward the airport. About 10 nautical miles from touchdown on Runway 27, he deviated from his course and the airplane struck a mountain at an elevation of 1,700 feet. The airplane made contact with several trees prior to coming to rest. There was a post-crash fire. Weather reports in the area revealed the mountains were enveloped in clouds, and there were occasional holes through which blue sky could be seen. The pilot's last communication to the Mannheim control tower indicated that he had found a clear area and was now proceeding toward the airport. This investigation is under the jurisdiction of the BFU, Federal Republic of Germany.
