NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On December 4, 2000, at 1200 Greenwich Mean Time, a Robinson R-22 helicopter, N40630, was substantially damaged from collision with terrain during a practice autorotation at Bolzano, Italy. The pilot and the passenger were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the local personal flight that originated at Bolzano, exact time unknown. The pilot reported to a Safety Board investigator that he was practicing autorotations, and completing the maneuver with a powered recovery. He said that during the recovery phase, the engine did not respond and he touched down in a tail low attitude. The tail boom was bent up and the main rotor made contact with the tail boom and severed it. The severed tail boom came to rest about 60 feet from the helicopter. The pilot further reported that he was reducing power for the maneuver without application of carburetor heat. He stated that an explanation for the power loss might be carburetor ice. The weather at the time of the accident was scattered clouds at 4,000 feet with a broken ceiling at 6,000 feet and 5 miles of visibility. The temperature was 48 degrees and the dewpoint was 42 degrees. The Italian Government has jurisdiction over the investigation and requests for information should be forwarded to: Accident Investigation Office Direzione Generale Aviazione Civile Via Cristoforo Colombo 420 00145 Roma, Italy tel: (39) 6 5484 410 fax: (39) 6 5484 657
