NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On July 17, 2000, an Alliance Air Boeing 737-200, registration VT-EGD, operating as flight CD- 7412 on a scheduled passenger flight from Calcutta, West Bengal to Delhi via Patna & Lucknow crashed on approach to Patna. The aircraft crashed approximately 1 kilometer southeast of the runway 25 threshold shortly after the crew commenced a 360 degree turn to lose altitude during the approach. At the time of crash, there were 52 passengers and a crew of six including two pilots and four airhostesses. 49 passengers and all six crewmembers received fatal injuries as a result of the impact. Four passengers received serious injuries. Five occupants of the houses received fatal injuries and five others were seriously injured. The aircraft was completely destroyed due to post impact fire. The investigation was conducted under authority of the Government of India. On March 31, 2001, the investigation team posted a final report on the Internet at http://civilaviation.nic.in/coi-fin/page1.htm The investigation determined that the cause of the accident was " loss of control of the aircraft due to human error (air crew). The crew had not followed the correct approach procedure which resulted in the aircraft being high on approach. They had kept the engines at idle thrust and allowed the airspeed to reduce to a lower than normally permissible value on approach. They them maneuvered the aircraft with high pitch attitude and executed rapid roll reversals. This resulted in actuation of the stick shaker stall warning indicating an approaching stall. At this stage, the crew initiated a Go Around procedure instead of Approach to Stall Recovery procedure resulting in actual stall of the aircraft, loss of control and subsequent impact with the ground."
