NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On April 25, 2001, a U.S.-registered Cessna TR182, N736ZT, went missing on an instrument flight rules (IFR) flight from Prince Rupert, British Columbia (B.C.), Canada, to Bellingham, Washington. According to a Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada official, the aircraft had experienced a loss of engine power prior to the loss of contact. The last radar contact with the aircraft was approximately 1550 Pacific daylight time in the vicinity of the Bella Bella, B.C. airport. Following loss of contact, search and rescue (SAR) forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were notified and a search was initiated. The U.S.-certificated private pilot of the aircraft, who was its sole occupant, was subsequently located about 2000. The pilot, who had ditched the aircraft offshore near Bella Bella, had no reported injuries, according to Transport Canada's preliminary accident notification information. The aircraft is presumed to have been substantially damaged in the ditching. The investigation of this accident is under the jurisdiction of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. Further inquiries should be directed to the TSB's Greater Vancouver office, 4-3071 Number Five Road, Richmond, B.C., Canada, V6X 2T4, telephone (604) 666-5826.
