NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On May 12, 2001, at 0930 Universal Coordinated Time, a Cessna 182S, G-BYEG, was substantially damaged during collision with terrain after takeoff from the Leicester Airport, Leicester, United Kingdom. The pilot/owner and one passenger were fatally injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the personal flight that originated at the Leicester Airport, destined for Copenhagen, Denmark. According to preliminary information from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch of the British Department of the Environment, witnesses said the airplane accelerated "normally" through the takeoff roll and initial climb. Between 100 feet and 300 feet above ground level, the nose of the airplane continued to pitch up until the airplane rolled left, descended sharply, and struck the ground in an approximate 40-degree nose-down attitude. The British Government has jurisdiction over the accident, and requests for information about the accident should be forwarded to: Mr. Barnett (Operations) Department of the Environment Transport and the Regions Air Accidents and Investigation Branch Berkshire Copse Road Aldershot Hampshire GU11 2HH Tel. +44 1252 510300
