NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident

On May 5, 2001, at 1432 Universal Coordinated Time, a Piper PA-42-1000, D-IMAY, was destroyed after impacting terrain near Nurnburg, Germany. The pilot was fatally injured. Weather conditions and type of flight plan filed were unknown. According to the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Investigation, the airplane was observed in a very steep climb just prior to entering a cloud layer at 1,800 ft. Review of the air traffic control radar-plot revealed that the airplane, which was cleared to 13,000 feet, discontinued the climb at 4,500 feet. The airplane then entered into a steep decent. Witnesses stated that they observed the airplane below the cloud bases, descending, then ascending, in the shape of a parabolic arc at high speed. The airplane climbed to an altitude of 4,700 feet, before descending again. The airplane impacted the ground at a speed of about 280 knots. The accident site was slightly right of the Runway 10 centerline, about 5 km from the Nurnburg Airport. The last communication received on the airborne frequency from the airplane was: "Nurnberg departure DIMAY airborne, 2000 climbing." This investigation is under the jurisdiction of the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Investigation.
